About
Us
Promising Projects is an agency representing independent musicians creating original music. We seek to represent heart-centered, consciously aware artists who have purposeful and positive intent. We look for musicians who exude humility, practice open-mindedness, exhibit willingness, develop their creativity, work diligently, and of course, have remarkable talent. We list talent last because we know that talent is the result of purposeful practice motivated by the pursuit of passion. Without the other character traits before it, which drive the pursuit, any raw talent with which a person might have been bestowed remains exactly that--raw and undeveloped.
We have consciously designed our company to make a positive contribution to the world. We follow a conscious capitalist model guided by a keen awareness of what we are contributing to the world, in both our offering to the marketplace (our roster) and the difference we make in the lives of the artists we represent. We are not beholden to narrow short-term interests, but driven by our Declarations of Success.
We are missionary, not mercenary. We constantly practice the paradoxical act of balancing on the fulcrum between growth (not stunting it by limiting our possibilities to only those within our field of sight) and stability (not growing beyond our means). We create synergy, and at the same time, exercise our right to be wrong. We do not drive by mandate, but lead by collaboration. We guide a family to which each artist on our roster contributes to the collective conscious. We manage as servants, not senators. We are unafraid of the truth and being bold.
It is our belief that music is a powerful force and it can change lives for the better (and for the worse). We opt for helping make the world a better place. Our Declarations of Success guide us in selecting artists who align with this ideal, full well knowing the ideal is unattainable, but the pursuit of it anyway is what makes the difference.
Our strategy since inception has always been to build a diverse roster of artists whom we can represent. While the artists that we represent are motivated first by an internal willingness to put forth into the world the art that resides within them, they are not without notions of financial prosperity. Neither are we. We look (and listen) for the prospect of commercial viability for each artist we consider representing. And at the same time, we look for new and emergent presentations that we feel like the world needs to hear (and see).
We also look at the substance behind the art. We have no interest in representing an artist whose art is ill-motivated and fake. We seek to work with genuine and authentic artists, who are intuitively aware of their human condition and are not afraid to be vulnerable, grow, change and evolve--thru their music.
Surprisingly, we don't have to agree with or necessarily like your music. It's a nice luxury when we do, but really our primary focus is on whether we feel like we can stand behind your music and represent IT and YOU. Frankly, there are just some styles of music that, because of their typical content and the ill-motivation behind it, we are not going to feel true to our mission by representing. In our opinion, the world doesn't need any more mechanized songs about getting drunk, descriptions of body parts or the unusual things people do with them, for them and to them. We're not saying those things are wrong; we are saying we don't want to be responsible for pushing more of that into the world.
LIkewise, the world may need to hear a viewpoint that runs counter to mainstream thought. Whether we agree with the viewpoint is irrelevant, because we know that all change begins with an idea. Most good ideas don't make sense at first, because they are almost always preceded by the 'sense' of everyone else to grasp them. At a minimum, opposing ideas serve to keep the mainstream in check.
Ultimately, we seek to create a vessel for musicians to seek and follow their dreams, carryout conscious business, remain authentic and create success, however they may define it. Ideal candidates for Promising Projects are artists who have vested themselves in their music having trudged the road of indie destiny and are approaching the limitations of the DIY approach; who are seeking to evolve from a mindset of struggle and strain to one of fulfillment and freedom; and who are willing to do the work necessary to get there. Similar to the craft of making music, our craft is creating viable businesses that provide abundance, for both the musicians we represent and for us. By living out our dreams, we get to help independent musicians to live out their's!
